Every February, America celebrates the accomplishments, and contributions black Americans have made in our country. At OLAPLEX, we find no greater joy than celebrating diversity the best way we know how, through healthy hair. When we think of Black History Month, we think of gorgeously textured natural hair, thick luscious manes, and the movers and shakers in history whose glamour still inspires us today.
In powerful presence, brains, and beauty, Old Hollywood’s Black starlets and singers are timeless. Though most of these beauties had gorgeous natural hair in their careers, they rarely showed it. Studios claimed stars’ work would sell more if they had ‘familiar’ hair texture and styles. What we would do to see The Supremes or Ella Fitzgerald sporting their all-natural hair!
We are grateful to live in an age where society celebrates diversity and individuality. To kick off Black History Month, we remember the legends of yesteryear who paved the way for the tastemakers of today.
Eartha Kitt
Eartha Kitt was the singer of ‘Santa Baby’ and an icon of feminism. Eartha’s music is iconic, and her outspoken nature has inspired several viral videos today posted by the likes of celebrities, the feminist movement, and more. She is the ultimate ‘be loyal to yourself’ advocate.
The Supremes
The sounds of the 1960s are no better exemplified than by Diana Ross and The Supremes. This musical group pushed mainstream media boundaries with record-breaking hits and inspired the movie Dreamgirls starring Beyonce. We imagine their super ‘60s weaves would’ve kept perfectly in shape with a ‘cocktail’ of OLAPLEX N°.6 and N°.7.
Dorothy Dandridge
She was one of the earliest black actresses nominated for an Academy Award. She rose to fame in the 1950s, being cast in leading roles because of her Caucasian features, giving women of color someone to relate to on-screen. Fun Fact: Halle Berry won an Academy Award in 2002 for her role in playing Dorothy Dandridge.
Ella Fitzgerald
There’s no sweeter sound to accompany an orchestra than that of the late Ella Fitzgerald. She was a Black American Music pioneer, selling over 40 million albums and winning 13 Grammy’s. We remember her not only by her wide vocal range and talent but by her always glamorous updos.
Nina Simone
The legendary Nina Simone was one of the first female Black artists to speak out against injustice and lend her voice to the 1960s civil rights movement. Though her story is as tragic as it is inspiring, we love how powerfully she rocked her natural hair.
Aretha Franklin
Aretha was the Queen of Soul, and for many women, the singer of anthems to feminism. Aretha Franklin was another artist with a torn and tragic family life. She did everything possible to become the legend we remember her as today. From hits like “Respect” and “Natural Woman,” one would find it challenging not to sing along.
Etta James
Etta James successfully crossed over to the American pop charts with her debut album, “At Last!”. Her voice was one of the best to grace the mic. Her contributions to the music industry are invaluable. We think Etta James' gorgeous, iconic platinum mane would've loved some OLAPLEX in the lightening process!
Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer with an innovative style that crossed jazz with pop music. She often adorned her naturally curly updo with floral accessories. A little ‘cocktail’ of OLAPLEX N°.6 and N°.7 would’ve kept her ‘do shiny, protected, and frizz-free throughout the night!
